“Genuss ohne Strom” – A night without electricity in Düsseldorf’s restaurants
Normally it never really gets dark in Düsseldorf. Picture by Karen Giacalone
You open the door to a restaurant and all you see is candlelight. Instead of the lasted tunes from the CD-Player an old gramophone is playing music. The air smells like spices and fried onions, but the stove has to stay off. Hold on, you’ve got no idea what I’m talking about, right?
This description pretty much sums up how I would picture a night in a restaurant that doesn’t use electricity – and that’s exactly what’s going to happen in my hometown Düsseldorf (and surroundings) next weekend. 14 restaurants will literally turn off their lights and prepare their meals completely without the use of electricity. I don’t know how they will do that (especially when I think of refrigeration and toilet flushes), but I guess that’s the appeal of this culinary experiment. The idea for this unusual event originates in an incident that took place on an island in Spain a few years ago – a power-cut that forced hospitality scene to be creative and keep their places open despite there was no electricity. The participating restaurants want to create a similar atmosphere to that night, an atmosphere full of laughter and magic.

Yummy food, an amazing experience you wouldn’t get everyday + an idea that makes people think, for me that equals a must-see event. So if you happen to be around Düsseldorf, hurry up and make a reservation – for example at the eco-friendly, lovely OKĀSAN in Pempelfort. Their fresh, locally sourced Japanese goodies, their super-friendly staff and their green, veggie-friendly concept make a great combination and turned me into a regular.
What I normally eat at Okasan. I wonder what they will serve next weekend…
“Genuss ohne Strom” takes place on the 11th and the 12th of October 2013. For a list of participating restaurants (Löffelbar, Miss Moneypenny or Restaurant Spoerl Fabrik amongst others) and their menus click here.
